The Nix family were included in the Waltham Rediscovered project as part of the Yankee community. They lived on the South Side.
Emerson W. Nix was born in Nova Scotia in 1899, the son of a farmer. His wife, Myrtle (Harvie) Nix was also born in Nova Scotia, in 1906. Emerson immigrated to the US around 1924, and settled in Waltham around 1927, when he worked as a milkman. By the time the portrait was taken 10 years later, he was working as a chauffeur.
Emerson and Myrtle had four children:

- Robie (born 1931)
- John (born 1934)
